Collecting Badges & Trophies

On Sunday 21st May, Celtic hosted Hearts for the Six-in-a-Row trophy day presentation and in time honoured fashion Trophy Day was also badge day for the Celtic FC Foundation. With five badges in the bag people are becoming conscious that when we hit the 10 they will also want to be able to show off their ten badges celebrating this remarkable achievement and as a consequence demand on badge day was at an all time high. This year the level of demand was compounded by the excellent badge design that also incorporated a commemoration of Lisboa50 celebrations. A normal badge day will see sellers leaving their positions just as the game kicks off and taking their buckets round for emptying before receiving their complimentary match ticket. With the TIFO due up just before kick off, badge selling ended 20 minutes before kick off. Despite the earlier than usual finish Foundation badge day still raised £25,000 to continue the excellent work of the Foundation across their projects aimed at improving Health, promoting Equality, encouraging Learning and tackling Poverty. I took my 7 year old with me on that Sunday to assist in the badge selling. I gave up my usual seat to my nephew and enjoyed the game from a different angle. From getting to the ground at 9:15am to leaving after the Brendan press conference, this is the video...

The Celtic Underground – Linfield Rosenborg And The Supreme Court

So, what do we have to talk about….Harry and Hullbhoy pondered that question and the chat quicker meandered into 2 hours of Celtic chat so we’ve decided that this should be cut down into two podcast – one mainly football and one mainly banners. This is mainly football, with a bit of what to do with cheats. The bhoys discuss the recent Linfield victory and the forthcoming tie against Rosenborg but as this podcast was being recorded the SPFL made some more noises about letting cheats go free so Hullbhoy and Harry also discuss that. If you want banners, bans and brigades discussions – along the corridor, third door on the left. The cover songs this week are Oasis Cum on Feel The Noize and Scott Bradley’s Post Modern Jukebox covering Creep. Enjoy… iTunes YouTube Soundcloud Speaker Stitcher Audioboom Tunein...

Lawwell’s Independence From Collective Responsibility?

Scottish football is the clubs. When people refer to the SFA and SPFL, they often talk of them as some disparate body but they can only act on the instructions of their members and the members are the clubs. Specifically on day to day management affairs, it is the SPFL and the SFA boards that are the real decision makers and Celtic have representations on both, until now. Peter Lawwell is stepping down from the SPFL Board. He may well replaced by someone at Rangers. There will be many who will look at this with a curiosity as to...

The Celtic Underground – Room For Growth Or Maxed Out?

This weeks podcast is all about the finances of Celtic – is there scope for growth or are we all maxed out? We know that the only thing that matters in football is winning on the pitch but that is determined by the quality of player and quality of manager at the club and THAT is largely determined by the money you have to spend, specifically when it comes to the Champions League and European Football in general. With the draw for Europe pending I therefore wanted to speak with two Tims who could give an insight to the financial climate within which we operate and to ascertain if we could squeeze an extra £10m or so that might push us over the edge and into regular UCL last 16 territory. Alan and Robin know their finances and are worldly wise so who better to have this chat with? Celtic Underground – Tom Boyd: My Celtic Life

This week St Anthony is joined by a legend of Celtic Park Mr Tom Boyd. Tom is well-known to all as a former Celtic player who (unlike many) has refused to take the King’s shilling and has remained a Celtic fan and defender and advocate of our club after retirement. Tom began his career at Motherwell and famously led the team to their 1991 Scottish Cup Final From there he moved to Chelsea for 12 months before arriving at Paradise in a swap for Tony Cascarino. At the hoops Boyd made 304 appearances, scoring just twice but significantly was part of the team that stopped the ten and was also part of Martin’s treble winning side. Tom also made 72 appearances for Scotland and is in the Hall of Fame. New music comes from Ghost Dance Collective, an Edinburgh band who emailed podcasts@Celticunderground.net If you want your new music or Celtic story on the podcast just email a file or link to a file and it’ll be used – we have no editorial line here. Celtic Standing Ahead Of The Curve

Saturday saw the unveiling of the first standing section at a top-level football ground in the UK in over 20 years. For understandable reasons Britain has moved away from standing at major sporting events since the tragedy at Hillsborough. The Taylor report however did not specifically criticise standing as a major contributor to that disaster. Indeed one of the tragedies of that day was that it was in line with similar stadium deaths that had occurred in the UK over the previous 100 years of association football with design and layout of the Leppings Lane End allied to police...

Debut Days – Joe Miller

On the afternoon of Friday 13th of November, Celtic announced the sensational signing of Joe Miller from Aberdeen for a fee of £650,000. Miller was rated as the best prospect in Scottish football and the ex Aberdeen manager, Alex Ferguson, was said to be livid with the move as he felt he had an agreement that Aberdeen would give him first refusal on Miller, to take him to Old Trafford. Joe was said to have been unsettled for some time at Pittodrie and it had been expected that he would have joined either Manchester United or Liverpool, who had...
